THAILAND Children’s Home 1801
Have you ever wished you could help some of the world’s less-fortunate kids? Here is an opportunity that will thrill your heart, as you see what one couple and their family has accomplished. Boot Camp classes train you for tasks awaiting you at House of Hope, a home for displaced Shan children in north-west Thailand. There is a garage to be built, where the boys can learn small engine and motorcycle repair. They also need a greenhouse for out-of- season vegies to feed the children residing at the Home. After completing that training at Karakariki Christian Camp just out of Hamilton, and bussing north to our largest city, you will fly from Auckland, through Hanoi in Vietnam and on to Bangkok where you will go through Customs. Then its on north to Chiang Rai. A three-hour drive through the countryside will take you to Mae Hong Son, where you’ll possibly be housed in tents. Your memories will come not so much from the work projects, as from your interaction with the children themselves, as you share fellowship with them, learn some of their stories, and help enlarge their English vocabulary. Attendance at a local village evangelical church in this strongly Buddhist nation will be another learning experience. Travel to the Thai/Myanmar border where the Long-Necked People live, shop at local markets and visit a Buddhist temple. Try some of that authentic Thai cuisine, and return to NZ with a sense of accomplishment, knowing you have made a difference in the daily lives of children less fortunate than yourselves. Debrief classes back in Hamilton will complete your summer short-term mission experience.
