Egypt - land of an ancient culture known for its pharoahs and pyramids and presently home to over 74 million people. Once Boot Camp is completed, you will bus to the Brisbane International Airport for a flight halfway around the world to Cairo, Egypt. You will continue by bus on an eight-hour journey, through the Arabian Desert, to your final destination, the Lillian Trasher Orphanage. This is one of the world's largest orphanages and is located in Assiout, along the Nile River. Home to over 650 orphans, it provides an opportunity for each child to develop to his or her full potential. Tradition has it that Assiouit was the place where Joseph and Mary brought the baby Jesus while fleeing from Herod. You may have the opportunity to enjoy Christmas twice with the orphans, once on December 25th and Orthodox Christmas celebrated in Egypt on January 7th. Your project is to do much-needed renovations in the orphanage, including some painting and tiling. Using puppets, drama, music and testimonies, you will share with the children who call the orphanage home. Housing will be in dorms with showers available. You will get to see the Great Pyramids and may have a nomadic experience riding a camel through the desert sand, or perhaps see the Great Sphinx of Giza. Choices for souvenirs are abundant: alabaster, inlaid wood, copper and brass items, silver plates and replicas of ancient artifacts are all available. You may have a chance to visit the Cairo Museum, or take a boat ride up the Nile before returning to Tewantin for Debrief. |
